The Phoenix (Jersey) School for Therapeutic Arts

New Students

Q. Do I just turn up to your School?

A. Yes, that is exactly what you can do. You can either watch a class or ask to take part straight away. You do not need to ring first but if you want more information before attending it is all here on this site.

Q. I have no experience in martial arts, is that a problem?
A. Absolutely no problem whatsoever, all are welcome.

Q. Am I insured if I train?
A. The first time you train with us you will be asked to fill out an insurance form, from that moment you are fully insured for 3rd party risks. Even if insurance money has not yet changed hands, once you sign the form you are insured.

Q. How much is it to insure me?
A. Insurance works out at £30 per annum which is only £2.50 per month. Not bad for cover up to £2,000,000.

Q. How much do I have to pay for lessons?
A. Your first 'taster' lesson is ABSOLUTELY FREE. If you then want to train regularly it becomes easier and more economic for you to pay by the month in advance. Payment are scaled, depending on how many arts you practice here and whether you are subject to a concessionary charge ie. Junior, Person in fulltime education, disabled etc (see Fees & Schedule Page).

Q. I have a medical condition or ailment that may stop or restrict my participation, what do I do?
A. If you wish to discuss anything with the instructors, it will remain confidential, but it is better for us to know of any problems, surgery, old injuries, or concerns so that we can assess the best way to proceed. Having a medical condition or other problem does not necessarily preclude you from training.

Q. What do I have to wear?
A. If you do not already possess a martial arts uniform it is recommended that you wear loose fitting clothing ie. T-shirt or sweatshirt and long pants like a tracksuit or leggings (shorts are not recommended).

Q. I am unfit or not as fit as I used to be, is this a problem?
A. Not at all, we welcome anyone. The fact that you are considering attending means that you are wanting to put that right. You are not expected to over exert yourself or do anything that you feel uncomfortable with.

Q. Will I be taught by qualified and experienced teachers?
A. All of our teachers are highly qualified and fully insured to teach the martial arts within our school.

Q. Is there a grading syllabus?
A. There are grading syllibi in both of the japanese arts that we offer, Aikido & Iai-Do. Progression is totally up to the individual.

Q. Does the School have a social life?
A. Yes we do. We often attend local hostelries after training and have gatherings and dinners during the year. Attendance is not compulsory here but we all mix extremely well in a friendly atmosphere and therefore you would be most welcome.

Q. Is there any age limit to train?
A. You have to be at least 14 years of age and there is no upper age limit. We have had students in their 70's training with the school.
